I'm afraid my boys are destined for 7-5 this year.

The more I look at that schedule, the more I think Iowa's the surprise contender in the Big Ten this year. It wouldn't be much of a surprise, obviously, and 7-5 is certainly possible, but Ferentz and company always seem to do their best work when less is expected of them. They ought to win the first four, and they currently own Penn State. If they can avoid slipping up against Northwestern(for once), they could easily be 8-0 going into the Michigan game, and that season-ending four-game stretch is not that daunting.

(that seems weird to say. Like saying Utah will win the Pac-10.)

Iowa's wearing throwbacks for their first home game against the Clones. From around 1920-1922

Former Iowa DC Norm Parker has died. He was Ferentz's right-hand man for a long time. Iowa had good defense, and occasionally great, for as long as he was there.

The NonConference

Northern Iowa (7-5)
Ball State (10-3)
Iowa State (3-9)
@ Pittsburgh (7-6)

Pitt seems like a slowly improving program and ISU can't be much worse than last year. Iowa tends to play a very unimaginative schedule but this is a bit better than normal.

Grade: C+

Your respective gradings of SEC schedules vs. Big10 schedules seems to be very imaginative...
