With the death of Osama bin Laden, many believe that Al Quaeda was dealt a mortal blow. Time will tell, but as we learned from the Oklahoma City bombing and Nidal Malik Hasan's rampage at Fort Hood, we have much to fear from our own home grown extremists. And not just from "lone nuts" acting on their own.
Since 2000, the number of organized hate groups -- from white nationalists, neo-Nazis and racist skinheads to border vigilantes and black separatist organizations -- has climbed by more than 50 percent, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Their rise has been fueled by growing anxiety over jobs, immigration, racial and ethnic diversity, the election of Barack Obama as America's first black president, and the lingering economic crisis. Most of them merely espouse violent theories; some of them are stock-piling weapons and actively planning attacks.

Seems that Idaho is simply eating off of Montana's spillover. Everytime I think of dyed-in-the-wool racist, I think MS. Everytime I think anti-government, weapons stockpiling militia man, I think MT.

I need to check in with Sam to see what he's gonna do. He's been quiet for a good week, since we've started discussing the migration from Crymic to GP. I'll see if he's just gonna publish the Contest on Crymic or come over here.

more on Uncle Thomas...
One day many decades from now, long after we're all gone, some bright legal historian will write the definitive biography of United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. It will undoubtedly include at least a chapter or two on the justice's eternally roiling relationship with his fellow black professionals, especially black judges and lawyers. And it will probably cite an ongoing kerfuffle in Georgia as an example of what the justice faced, and why, even 20 years after contentiously ascending to the High Court.

As well told by veteran Supreme Court correspondent Tony Mauro, officials in Augusta, Georgia, are under fire from some local judges and lawyers for inviting Justice Thomas to speak at the dedication of a new courthouse to be named in honor of the memory of John Ruffin Jr. Ruffin was a civil rights attorney who later -- in 1994! -- became the first black member of the Georgia Court of Appeals. He died last year. The new courthouse is scheduled to open May 18th. And Justice Thomas is on his way

in 2007, he came to my law school (his niece was attending). Some of he professors didn't want him to speak. I was very much in favor of him speaking, not because I agree with his judicial philosophy (I profoundly disagree with his natural law basis for evaluating the law), but because he represents the office.

He gave a talk, but it turns out (thankfully) that I was at a conference out of town.

I'm really disappointed in the pussification of Pau, but more so that his former team lost in the semis. I thought it'd be cool to see how the Anti Pau #33 would match up against Dirk. Durant will be fun to watch, though.

I've been out of town for a few days & had no 'Net access. First time in nearly a decade that's happened; I came home to over 300 emails. :o
