J.R. Smith Looking for a Big Contract
It’s unclear exactly when free agent guard J.R. Smith will be free of his obligations in China. He could end up available as early as mid-February or well into March depending on the Zhejiang Golden Bulls playoff seeding/performance.

Smith has been linked to both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers but both may be long-shots. Neither has more than the veteran’s minimum to spend ($1.07 million in the case of Smith) and J.R. is looking to be compensated.

The New York Knicks are also rumored to be a suitor, armed with the more lucrative Room Exception at $2.5 million (both numbers are technically prorated because of the lockout).

Multiple sources say Smith is looking for the opportunity to showcase his talents and while the Knicks certainly need help at guard, J.R. has already had a stint with Carmelo Anthony. That may not be as appealing to Smith as some might think.

A more appealing option might be the Minnesota Timberwolves who have their $2.5 million, are suddenly a .500 team and have a true need at the two long-term. Coach Rick Adelman has a tremendous reputation for bringing out the best in players who have had difficulty adjusting to the NBA (Metta World Peace nee Ron Artest).

It’s also unclear where Indiana will spend their money but at $2.7 million under the salary floor (and $14 million below the salary cap), they’re going to be cutting a check to the league after the season if they don’t bring on some payroll. A source indicates that Indiana would probably look elsewhere.

UPDATE: James Posey’s amnestied salary counts towards the Pacers’ minimum salary so they are sufficiently over the cap floor.

Additionally, Smith wants to be a primary option offensively. He’s not going to get that on the Lakers, Clippers, Knicks or Pacers.

The Chicago Bulls have their Bi-Annual Exception at $1.9 million but role for Smith would probably be an issue for J.R. Additionally, a source said Chicago is undecided on whether or not Smith would be the right move for the organization.

The Clippers may have a bigger role at two-guard with Chauncey Billups suffering an Achilles’ injury, but even then Smith would not necessarily be a primary scorer for the team.

The Wolves may be the best overall option for Smith if money and showcase are the priority.

JR Smith is a knucklehead, but we don't have a single real SG on our roster - so he'd be a massive upgrade.

Adelman does have a history of working well with idiots, so maybe it could work...

What makes that more noteworthy is that it pretty much guarantees that Minny doesn't make the Playoffs and Houston most likely will. Minny has Houston's pick (via Memphis) that is Lottery protected. So, Minny may have injured themselves into another draft pick this Summer in a pretty solid draft (if I got all the nuances correct), and Houston may have lost a pick that they could've used as sweetener in a trade for a superstar to anchor their team.

I thought it was a Memphis pick via Houston. So, in essence, it's Houston's pick. I could be wrong. These things are 100% outside my wheelhouse.

We have Memphis' 2013 1st round pick from the HOU deal.

The only way Minny gets a 1st round pick this year (barring a trade) is if Utah makes the playoffs (we have their 1st round pick this year, but its lottery protected).

So the same scenario exists, just replace HOU with Utah.

Houston's 2012 pick could go to NJ, and NY's 2012 pick should go to Houston:

2012 first round draft pick from New York
New York's own 2012 1st round pick to Houston (top 5 protected in 2012, top 5 protected in 2013, top 5 protected in 2014, and top 5 protected in the 2015 Draft). If Houston does not receive a 1st round pick from New York by the 2015 Draft, then New York will convey their own 2015 2nd round pick and 2016 2nd round pick to Houston. Not just the Wolves.

The Vikings best player (Peterson) and the Gophers best player (Mbakwe) both went down with torn ACL's this year too. And the Twins best 2 players (Mauer and Morneau) missed most of the season...

Times like this I'm EXTRA glad I don't live in Minny anymore and am not surrounded by the constant reminders...

Love follows up his 51 point game with his 7th career 30/20 game.

That makes him the active leader - Duncan and Dwight each have 6, KG has 5.

He also chipped in 4 assists, 2 steals , 3 blocks and 0 turnovers.

Love asked for 5 years. He was happy to commit for the whole thing, but Kahn wouldn't do it. He still has no idea just how good the kid is.

I think he was thinking he could sign Love and Rubio at the same time and size their deals appropriately at that time. Big mistake. What it really did was give both of them the opportunity to bail at the same time.
