Our agency has 8 homes and 1 business insured in the fire areas. So far we know of one total loss on a house but only because a firefighter was a neighbor of our insured and he saw it with his own eyes. We've never experienced anything like this...day 3 and nobody knows anything and owners are still blocked from the affected areas. Not to be trite, but the waiting really is the hardest part...I'm hearing every range of human emotion there is. So much for the instant information age.

You need to calm down, tick. A wiser man than either of us once said "God can be brutally violent in his punishment if he chooses and it would be right because he is the author of right." That should prove soothing to anyone involved...

Interestingly, that's how Islamic terrorists defend their actions in the name of their god.

There really is very little difference between the two religions.

True, except that I would say from an historical perspective, the christians have been more organized and effective in their brutality and carnage. They've mellowed quite a bit in the past few centuries (and boy don't they let you know it, and boy don't they want everyone to just forget the centuries previous to that), but clearly islam is merely playing catch-up...

History has a sly sense of humor. It caused an epiphany regarding infrastructure projects - roads, harbors, airports, etc. - to occur on a bridge over Boston's Charles River, hard by Harvard Yard, where rarely is heard a discouraging word about government.

Last spring, Larry Summers, former treasury secretary and Harvard president, was mired in congealed traffic on the bridge, which is being repaired, and he suddenly understood "American sclerosis."

Repairing the bridge, which was built in 11 months in 1912, will take about five years.

The problem, he concluded in a blog post, is "a gaggle of regulators and veto players" - Massachusetts' government, contractors, environmental agencies, the historical commission, etc. - "each with the power to block or to delay, and each with their own parochial concerns." Summers's sunburst of understanding continued: "I'm a progressive, but it seems plausible to wonder if government can build a nation abroad, fight social decay, run schools, mandate the design of cars, run health insurance exchanges or set proper sexual harassment policies on college campuses, if it can't even fix a 232-foot bridge competently. Waiting in traffic over the Anderson Bridge, I've [empathized] with the two-thirds of Americans who distrust government. . . . We seem to be caught in a dismal cycle of low expectations, poor results and shared cynicism."

Even in the face of a terrible tragedy, some of youse can snark and sass and bring mirth to a bad situation. Kudos to your high wit.

Pat yourself on the back, then text 90999 to the American Red Cross. Best tenner you've spent in a while, hero.

Nah, I give a shit. My family members in Nashville and Knoxville aren't in the fire area, but are affected. Plus I have white people in my family.
