1. Mike Price was hired as Alabama's head football coach. It was even on tv.
2. After his escapade in Florida (which, BTW happened during a trip which he took as Alabama's head football coach), he was then fired from being Alabama's head football coach.
3. In between #1 and #2 above, he was paid for services rendered as Alabama's head football coach.
4. Ergo, Mike Price was Alabama's head football coach.

He was not hired, he never signed the contract.
As for his firing, the term WAS used. President Witt revoked the contract offer.
He had to be paid, or else it would be considered slave labor.

Note the reference to Price being, in fact, hired. Also note the one who called Priced hired was none other than Mal Moore. He was, I believe, Bama's AD at the time.
