Was at a friend's house tonight. He had "Sinatra Select" Jack Daniels, which is apparently a $150 1L bottle of special JD.

90 proof, more smokey than regular JD. But sooooo many better whiskies for the price, though. I just don't understand, just like I don't understand the people who pay for Johnny Blue when there are so many better premium scotches for the same price (or even less).

I read that they changed the process on JD in the 1980s to make their products 80 proof and more marketable, but it was 90 proof with a big bite (and not a lot of customers) in the 40s.

The Jim Beam and Jack Daniels of my youth was 90 proof. They changed to 86 proof and then to 80 back in the late 80's.

But I'm not a fan of Jack. It's basically a Canadian- bourbon hybrid with the soul ripped out.

"just like I don't understand the people who pay for Johnny Blue when there are so many better premium scotches for the same price (or even less)."

Evidently, that was Muammar Gaddafi's spirit of choice. I occasionally shell out for the Johnny Gold, but I agree with you that the blue is too pricey for what it is. Too pricey for me, anyway. Johnny Black works just fine...

Johnny Black was Churchill's drink of choice. My dad drank Red Label - to excess. I didn't know about Black, Blue, Green, Gold, etc., until college.

The best low-priced scotch is a simple Glenfiddich 12. I will brook no discussion on this matter. Quod loquor est lex..

I like Johnny Red. It's more medicine-y than black, almost like a band-aid, but sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for...

I used to enjoy Genesee cream ale, haven't seen it around anywhere in awhile. Not around here, anyway...

'Alcoholic' bears in Russia may head to rehab

SOCHI, Russia -
Two bears in Sochi, Russia, have apparently become addicted to alcohol from living outside a restaurant for the past 20 years.

The Big Hearts Foundation said the two male bears, which a court ordered to be seized from a restaurant owner in Sochi on March 3, have been offered a new home at a bear sanctuary outside Brasov, Romania, where officials said the animals would be treated for their addiction.

Anna Kogan, of the Big Hearts Foundation, told the BBC that the charity is seeking help with the logistics of the bears' move.

The foundation said the bears have "drowned in beer" at the restaurant for 20 years, as patrons would frequently pass drinks to the animals.

They're Russian. They're supposed to be drunk.
