Why is gas so expensive?

I don't want to hear political bullshit as to why, I just want honest American answers.

Oil and gas are world commodities and as such they are very much influenced by world demand and world influence. No matter how much we drill and use of what we drill, as a world commodity, the price is determined by overall production and what we produce compared to the world is relatively small.

The only way to have more control over the price locally is to incorporate things into our energy plan that are not world commodities (solar, nuclear, wind etc), use other world commodities that are cheap (coal, currently natural gas) or to put tariffs on oil from foreign countries.

Each solution has problems associated with it.

Gas is not that expensive, comparatively, in the US.

That's my main question. Why does the price change so drastically overnight?

I like tboone's idea

start converting all semis to natural gas --if that works well we've decreased the demand for gasoline significant;y in america and have the threat that we convert passenger cars to natural gas in the future. the good old boys club would probalby stop that but I do think we can get semi's/busses etc converted

That is a good idea. I also think we should also surcharge all purchases of non-commercial vehicles with more than 6 cylinders. The auto lobby would fight it tooth and nail, but I think it would be worthwhile.
