I ran a couple pickup games this morning out in "BedStuy, Semper Fi."

My wind was decent, but my hops are minimal. I can maybe get real height off the ground one or two times in a game. The rest is all set shots, using my strength to gain optimal positioning and Karl Malone style swipes at the ball.

I will say that my vision is still perfect. I had about 12 assists over two games and we did not lose either of them, but my mind thought my body could do more things than it could. I refuse to get old, but I have come to terms with the fact that I'm not young anymore.

Haha!!! I'm right there with you with the "mind thought my body could do more things than it could" part.

Once I stopped playing ball competitively and entered the real world I lost all my flight. In high school & college I could dunk the ball at 5'9".

Funny thing is I let myself go then went back in the gym again and trained like never before. My endurance, strength & conditioning were off the charts compared to my basketball days. But I never got my hops back. It just made me realize how strength is such a factor, because I was still killing cats.... just in a different way, and I was wiser & smarter.

Back then I joined a phillipino basketball league and played combo small forward/power forward. Thing is, I was still really effective shooting postup turnarounds off the block & rebounding against guys who were 6'2" & 6'3" .
If no one comes from the future to stop you from doing it, then how bad of a decision can it really be?

Yeah, I still ran good games...they were just different styles of play than I used to bring to the table. It felt good to get out there, though, and chop it up. Plus, it was about 60 degrees this morning and clear; it was perfect weather for a dude who hasn't run a game in about 2 years.

I can STILL dunk (on an 8-ft goal).

I'm sold old, sickly and broken down that I need a ladder to make a layup, even at 6'2" (an exaggeration, obviously).
From the town of Possum's Paw, Alabama, standing 6'2" and weighing 150 lbs, the one, the only, the legend... Bootney Farnsworth.
